We’ve seen a lot of hosiery options for both men and women at Trend Hunter recently, and I’m reminded of a Renee Zellweger quote I read this morning that credit Hanes pantyhose for her survival. While on location in Winnipeg, Canada filming “New in Town,” Renee Zellweger beat the bitter cold by wearing several layers of pantyhose. “I didn’t know cold like that… And who knew that pantyhose could be so very important, three or four pairs at a time.” Renee Zellweger continues, “I never imagined that I would rejoice at the pantyhose laid out on the bed by wardrobe every morning. I would not be here today were it not for the Hanes, I promise this.” I tested out my first pair of bamboo tights a few months ago in chilly weather and am every bit as hooked as Zellweger. Over the past seven days, a famous starlet was mocked for her weight, a woman gave birth to eight (count 'em, eight!) kids, and a disgraced governor was kicked to the curb after begging for his job. Revisit those tales of woe with the Buzz week in review. J-Simp's Controversial Curves Has Jessica Simpson (gasp!) gained weight? Pictures of her wearing a rather unfortunate pair of mom jeans seemed to indicate that the formerly svelte starlet had (how to put this delicately?) packed on a few pounds. Yes, we know. Making fun of anyone's weight is not nice, but many bloggers and searchers didn't seem to care. Fortunately for Jessica, several celebs came to her defense, including the curvacious Kim Kardashian, ex-husband Nick Lachey, and sister Ashlee. Ashlee, who knows a thing or two about being made fun of, went so far as to call the comments about her sister's weight "disgusting." She has a "love-eight" relationship Knowing you're responsible for the health and well being of one kid is terrifying enough. So, imagine the sense of pressure that comes with having eight kids. At once. Heart attack city for some, but for a proud mother from Los Angeles, the birth of healthy octuplets was a joyous occasion. Mom asked not to be identified for privacy reasons, but that didn't stop the buzz. In fact, it likely encouraged folks to search high and low for pictures and gossip. An article on the family and the six kids the mysterious mom already has stirred up a cloud of buzz. Additionally, queries on "octuplets" and "eight babies" screamed like an ornery child. Bye-bye to Blago He may have left politics, but we'll always remember his hairline. Rod Blagojevich, the disgraced former governor of Illinois, was removed from office this week. After making an impassioned plea for his job that apparently fell on unsympathetic ears, state representatives not only took away Blago's job, they banned him from seeking any political office in the state of Illinois. Ever. Cue the sad trombone. Blogs and talk shows weighed in on the courtroom theatrics (The Daily Show called Blago "Scumdog Million-Hairs") and searches soared on "blagojevich" as well as countless creative misspellings. Also buzzing this week... • Exxon Mobil posted record profits ($45 billion) for 2008 and Wall Street executives treated themselves to $20 billion in bonuses. Try to keep your blood pressure from rising too high... • Elizabeth Hasselbeck is pregnant and she wants you know it! The co-host of "The View" (aka television's longest hour) announced the news on her show. If you saw strangers weeping with tears of joy on Thursday and wondered why, well, mystery solved.

The paramedic charged with trying to extort John Travolta over the death of his son was threatening to reveal a medical document irrelevant to 16-year-old Jett's death, according to Bahamian officials. Tarino Lightbourn has been in custody since his arrest on Jan. 23, and is charged with conspiracy to commit extortion and attempted extortion. His attorney is charged with two counts of extortion. Lightbourn attempted to sell a one-page document that Travolta signed when Lightbourn was treating Jett, Bahamian police told People. Travolta's son died of a seizure this month at his family's vacation home on Grand Bahama. The document, called a "refusal to transport," did not apply in the Travolta case, Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Marvin Dames said. "It did not apply because he was very ill, and so, the only alternative would be to take him to the hospital. Refusal to transport documents are for cases involving minor injuries, Dames said. "If your injuries are minor and you don't want to be transported, the ambulance driver would produce that form. It waives responsibility on the part of the hospital." Dames said the Travoltas did everything they could to save their son. "We were satisfied from all our investigations that the Travolta family and those who rendered aid ... did all that was humanly possible to revive Jett," Dames says.   "There's no evidence to support that there was any effort to avoid medical treatment," he adds. "Lightbourn said that himself in several interviews." Dames told People the extortion attempt occurred nearly two weeks ago, when Lightbourn's attorney, former Bahamian Sen. Pleasant Bridgewater, called a Travolta attorney and said Lightbourn wanted to sell the document. Travolta then complained to Bahamian police. "The complaint states the request was for $25 million," Dames says. "At the time, she represented the young man. She would have made the request." Bridgewater has said her actions were misinterpreted and that she is innocent of any wrongdoing. Dames said investigators haven't located the document, and can't verify its authenticity. Don't disturb Alec, he's having a moment. It's sad, but true, the news we reported on Tuesday seems to have been a smidge too early. Meryl Streep is not appearing on 30 Rock, despite the begging, pleading, and wooing of one Mr. Alec Baldwin. So what happened? Alec's publicist is saying that the rumors of him plying Streep with praise and insisting on her guesting are "not true." How cold, and just like Baldwin to deny a lady after getting her all worked up over the promise of stardom and... well, I guess Meryl didn't need help with that. But still, we're bummed that the grand dame of American cinema won't be showing up on our favorite slice on insane NBC humor. I personally pictured an episode where she'd be caught in a torrid love triangle with Tracey Morgan and Jack McBrayer. We can see the montage now: Meryl ice skating with Tracey in the Plaza, skipping down the halls with Jack in matching vests, and all of it shot in soft focus to "More Than a Feelin'" by Boston. Sigh. You're a cruel, cruel man, Baldwin.
