Why so serious, Hollywood? Both the nerd-fandom and the Heath Ledgerites were up in arms on Thursday. Why? The Dark Knight didn't get nominated for a Best Picture Oscar. Or for Best Director. Sure, Heath Ledger was given a Best Supporting Actor nod for his anarchistic Joker, and there were scores of technical nominations for the flick, but fans were surprised that the Academy didn't see in the film what so many of them saw (over and over and over again, in some cases). So what's the disconnect between the audiences - who obviously saw something critically important in the movie - and the Academy - who has a long tradition of ignoring action-driven movies when it comes to the big prize? To begin with, there is the problem with how films are selected for nomination. Even if every single member of the Academy voted for The Dark Knight to receive a Best Picture nom, the ranking of their voting could have kept it out of the running. But the bigger problem seems to be two-fold: 1. There was no nudity: The Reader could be summed up in three words: Naked Naked Naked. Nudity is part of life, but I've probably seen more of Kate Winslet nude now than any other actress in Hollywood. The Dark Knight should have focused more time on having any of the primary actors wander around the set shirtless, pantsless, and just generally nude. Why do clothed what you can take on full monty? 2. Batman did not fight Nazis, wear prosthetics, portray misunderstood geniuses or include overly-sentimental looks at real-world issues: The inclusion of any of these devices in a movie are surefire Oscar gold. Just take a look at any of the Best Picture winners/noms for the past 10 years or so. For my part, I enjoyed The Dark Knight, but don't understand the need for the comic book fans to have the properties they love validated by Hollywood. For every TDK, there's a string of awful movies like Ironman, Catwoman, and Superman Returns. It seems as though the need to be included in the fawning ceremony of the awards is just the latest attempt to mainstream a subgenre of entertainment that will never be considered as "serious," as they'd like it to be.

by Jon Brooks This weekend, tons o' buzz was created by a new Miss America and an old Yankee, and the alleged extortion of John Travolta kept Web users clicking as well. Here are just a few of this weekend's most popular stories ... Here she is .. For an event that was taken off network TV because of poor ratings, there sure is a lot of online activity around the Miss America pageant. Users voted their interest in the sometimes-derided contest at the Search box, producing a strong showing for Miss America-related queries in Buzz and across the Yahoo! network. Miss Indiana's Katie Stam, 22, overcame a throat infection and laryngitis to become the first contestant from her state to snatch the crown. Most users, no doubt, are interested only in the triumph of the human spirit that the winning moment exemplifies, and not the swimsuit competition. And how does Sarah Palin become embroiled in everything, anyway? Torre tell-all Joe Torre has enjoyed a reputation as one of the more even-keeled stewards of the highly paid and pampered cohort we call professional athletes. But that doesn't mean Joe, when pushed, can't throw down. According to New York's Post and Daily News, Torre, in a new book with SI's Tom Verducci, says Alex Rodriguez's Yankee teammates called the slugger "A-Fraud" after "he developed a 'Single White Female'-like obsession" with Derek Jeter and requested a personal clubhouse assistant. Torre also criticizes Yankees' GM Brian Cashman, saying the exec betrayed him in the manager's last, unsuccessful, contract negotiations. Yankee-haters everywhere delight; Yankee fans — support Joe, or reassess as a cry-baby? Discuss ...  Travolta extortion plot alleged Bahamian police said they are investigating an alleged extortion plot against John Travolta after the actor lodged a complaint. Police arrested a local senator and held a former minister of tourism for questioning, but no charges have been filed. The former minister, Obie Wilchombe, maintained his innocence on Saturday in an interview with Us Weekly. Some reports said the case involved a threat to sell pictures of Jett Travolta's body, but no official details have been released. Jett Travolta died of a seizure at his father's home in the Bahamas on Jan. 2. Also buzzing this weekend ... This video of University of Houston guard Aubrey Coleman fouling, then stepping on the face of Arizona's Chase Budinger received a lot of clicks. The top Buzz searches for much of the weekend were "obama" and "circuit city." Obama is receiving good marks, thus far; Circuit City and its "liquidation sale," not so much.  Speaking of Obama, these candid photos of the first 48 hours of his administration are also drawing attention.
