Katie Stam of Indiana Crowned Miss America

Denim-clad beauties stood in marked contrast to the traditional, more formal mood at this year's Miss America pageant, as young women from around the country vied for the crown at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. And the winner was? Miss Indiana Katie Stam, 22, a communications major at the University of Indianapolis. Another innovation at the 88-year-old competition, which aired on TLC, was the selection of four top finalists by votes cast by viewers. The pageant's host was Mario Lopez.

What you can learn from this tragedy... When we learned on Friday that Mariana Bridi da Costa passed away after losing her hands and feet to complications from a urinary tract infection (UTI), it was almost too much to even think about. Mariana was a beautiful, vibrant young woman growing into her international stardom thanks to a healthy modeling career and her participation in the Miss World competition in her homeland of Brazil. I'm sure that if you're reading this, and a woman, you've experienced the hell that is a UTI. Millions of women in the U.S. alone experience this every year, and about nine million actually wind up at the doctors for it. And though it almost always feels like you are going to die from it, finding out that you actually can die from something that seems more common as an annoyance than an actual serious problem was pretty shocking. It's too late for Mariana, who suffered the pain of having her hands and feet removed to stem the infection prior to passing away from complications, but we all can and should be vigilant with our own urinary health so that this never snuffs out another young woman on the brink of making a difference.
